Okay, I'll admit I was somewhat skeptical after reading and hearing different things over the last few years about this show series, but I decided to give it a whirl. The series was pretty good, especially with the judging, which I felt was very competent and fair up until the show on 6/13 nad has steadily went downhill since then. I didn't think there was anything worse that could be done with the judging than what there was at the show on 8/15, that was until today's show. Evidently, Vicky Mandley, a very fair and credible judge became ill and had to leave. Fair enough, as those things do happen, and I'm sure that she didn't want to drive to Lancaster from Wooster, only to turn around and go back home.
I know that this didn't leave Karen with many options, but what she did next was absolutely shameful. She brings in two people, Ben Miller and Susam Rinehart to judge the show, both of whom have either children, clients, or both showing at the very show. Karen assured us that what we all felt would happen, and in fact did happen, wouldn't. Ben's folks were getting pinned repeatedly, Susan's people were getting pinned repeatedly, and a show that has already experienced damaged credibility lost even more in my opinion.
To me there are other options that would have been available to go about this situation.
One would have been to offer up refunds to those that felt it wouldn't be judged fairly and allow them to scratch.
Obviously a big one would have been for Ben and Susan to have told their family members and clients that were showing that they would have to sit this one out because of the situation.
Another would have been for everybody to show as normal, you get your ribbons for placing as usual, but for those that are vying for season awards you only get one point per class no matter if you placed or not.
I know thta this is not a situation handled very often, if ever, but Karen, Ben, and Susan opened themselves right up for this kind of stuff.
This season started out with some stellar judging, but like I said since the show on 6/13 it has been pretty much Bush League. |
